2020 Oscars ratings hit record low due to no host

According to foreign media, the rough ratings for the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020 were released, with a mere 5.3 for the 18-49 age group and 23.6 million viewers, a sharp drop from last year's 7.7 for the 18-49 age group and 29.6 million viewers (last year's rough ratings were 6.6 and 25.5 million viewers), setting a record for the lowest ratings in Oscar history.

The Oscars saw a 20% year-on-year drop in viewers, with a 31% drop in the key audience group (18-49 years old). Last year’s Oscars halted a four-year ratings decline and gained viewers for the first time since 2014.

U.S. ratings rankings (programs, 18-49 ratings, number of viewers)

1. Super Bowl Halftime Show 2.7 billion 103 million

2. Oscar 5.3 23.6 million (rough report, detailed report will be adjusted upward, the lowest in history)

3. Grammy 5.4 18.7 million (historical low)

4. Golden Globe Award 4.7 18.325 million

5. ABC New Year's Eve Party 2.0 7.29 million

6. Critics' Choice Awards 0.2 1.2 million (historical low)

7. SAG Actors Guild Award 0.26 1.187 million (historical low)

"This is too old-school, too white-minded and too boring," said Tom O'Neil, founder of Goldderby.com, a news website that covers the awards ceremony.

O'Neill believes that "Joaquin Phoenix, Renée Zellweger, Brad Pitt, and Laura Dern have won many awards before. It is not surprising that they won the important Oscar awards for Best Actor, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor. There were almost no surprising and memorable moments in the entire award ceremony."

In addition, the lack of a host has also caused criticism from some professionals. Dominic Patten, a film critic for the American film and television news website Deadline, said sarcastically that "the Oscars ceremony calls for the arrival of a conductor to control this circus that is about to become boring."

Compared to 2019, the ratings for this year's Golden Globe Awards and Grammy Awards ceremonies both declined, but the decline was less than that of the Oscars.
