John Woo: The black female lead of the American version of "The Killer" withdrew and also talked about Marvel

John Woo recently revealed at the Hawaii International Film Festival that actress Lupita Nyong'o has withdrawn from the American version of "The Killer," but the project is still in operation. The crew is still looking for the lead actor, who is still a woman.

On Nyong'o's exit, Woo said: "Because she's so popular now, there were scheduling issues. We rewrote the script and it took a lot of time... but she had to go do another project."

John Woo explained that he had seen many female action stars and felt that their performances lacked soul. He wanted to create a complex female action star who not only had to fight well, but also had to bring prominent elements of emotion and humanity to the role. He said that Nyong'o was his first choice, but because of her withdrawal, they have just started looking for a new female lead.

Earlier, according to foreign media reports, John Woo will work with Universal Pictures to remake his 1989 action classic "The Killer". This movie is tailor-made for "Black Panther" actress Lupita Nyong'o. She will play the role of the old version of Chow Yun-fat.

In addition, John Woo also weighed in on Scorsese's recent discussion of "Marvel is not cinema." He said that while he appreciates the way movies entertain and make money, he has reservations about Martin Scorsese's views on comic book movies. He said that as such movies become more popular, they have become the new standard for young audiences, who will have less desire to learn or watch what Mr. Scorsese calls "real movies."

John Woo also said that he once had the opportunity to direct a comic book movie. Stan Lee approached him before the birth of Marvel movies and wanted him to direct a superhero movie, but he refused - and his answer today is the same. "I don't have that kind of talent," he admitted. "I'm not a science fiction fan - I don't think I can make a good science fiction movie. There are too many imaginations... I don't think I can reach that level."
