Sonic spin-off 'Knuckles' sets Paramount+ viewership record

“Knuckles” set a streaming record for Paramount+ in its opening weekend.

The Sonic spinoff, starring Idris Elba as the main character Knuckles, premiered last weekend on April 26 and accumulated more than 4 million hours of streaming time that weekend. It also became the most watched children's and family series on the Paramount+ platform to date.

“Sonic fans have been in full force behind this production,” said Jeff Grossman, executive vice president of programming at Paramount+. “We’re thrilled with Knuckles’ record-breaking performance, and the entire Sonic universe has received an incredible boost from its premiere.”

Knuckles also reportedly appears to have broken the Paramount+ premiere viewership record previously set by Halo.

Of course, what's not included is how much of the series is actually watched. Do viewers stick around for the entire series, or just the first few episodes?

The six-episode limited series is set between the last film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and the third film, which is set to be released in December this year. The third film will feature the villain Shadow from Sonic Adventure 2.

After much speculation, Shadow's voice actor has now been confirmed to be Keanu Reeves.

Series producer Toby Asher described the Sonic movie as an "Avengers-level event," while the spinoffs offer character studies.
