The director of Shang-Chi talks about why he chose Simu Liu: He is the right person

Recently, the famous director Destin Cretton responded to the casting of "Shang-Chi" in July during an interview with the media at the Toronto Film Festival, saying "He is great!" At the SDCC Comic Con in July 2019, Marvel announced the three protagonists of the first Chinese superhero movie "Shang-Chi", among which the male protagonist Shang-Chi was played by Canadian Chinese actor Simu Liu.

Regarding Simu Liu playing the male lead in Shang-Chi, many netizens said that Hollywood's impression of Asian characters is too stereotyped, and some netizens even said that Simu Liu is "too ugly" to be the male lead. However, director Destin Cretton said in an interview that he thinks Simu Liu is great, and said, "When the right person shows up, it becomes an undefinable thing. Everyone is on the same page, and everyone is really excited," to show that everyone agrees with Simu Liu playing the male lead.

When asked if Captain Marvel could be in the mix, he responded, "I think there's always room for Larson. But I don't know. We'll see." When asked about developing movie characters and the like, Crichton responded, "It's the same for me as it is for anything - I look for the story through the character, and I look for the theme through the things that touch me."

Marvel Studios also recruited Dave Callaham, the Chinese-American screenwriter of "Wonder Woman 1984", as the screenwriter of "Shang-Chi", hoping to make the film reach the level of "Black Panther" and let everyone become familiar with this "new hero that combines Asian and Asian American themes, created jointly by Asian and Asian American filmmakers."

Marvel's new Asian superhero film "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" is scheduled to be released in North America on February 12, 2021, the first day of the Lunar New Year. Canadian-Chinese Simu Liu will play the protagonist "Shang-Chi", Tony Leung will play "Mandarin", and "Crazy Rich Asians" heroine Awkwafina will join.
