Netflix announces live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop with Shinichiro Watanabe as advisor

"Cowboy Bebop" is a television animation produced by Japan's SUNRISE Animation Company. It was broadcast in 1998 and won the Best Television Animation of the Year Award at the 3rd Kobe Animation Awards in the same year. It also won the Nebula Award at the Japan Science Fiction Convention in 2000.

The story is set in 2071. It depicts a group of "bounty hunters" traveling between the stars. The protagonists Spike and Jet encounter all kinds of people and things during their travels.

The live-action adaptation of "Cowboy Bebop" is scheduled to have 10 episodes, and the animation screenwriter Shinichiro Watanabe will serve as a consultant. The script for the first episode will be written by Christopher Yost, whose most recent work is "Thor 3: Ragnarok".

A few years ago, there were reports that a Cowboy Bebop adaptation starring Keanu Reeves was in the works, but production on the film never got off the ground. "It looks like I'm not going to be able to play Cowboy Bebop," Reeves said in a 2013 Reddit Q&A, adding, "The script is really great, it's amazing," and "but it's going to cost about $500 million to make."
