Following the release of the first trailer for "Captain Marvel" last night, Disney has another bold idea - its own streaming platform Disney Play is expected to be launched in the second half of next year. It is currently ambitiously preparing a series of self-produced limited series (the kind that tells a complete story in one season), and some popular characters in the MCU will appear. According to Variety, these web series may feature Loki, Scarlet Witch, and some comic characters who have never had solo movies, and the two actors, Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen, happened to be doing well back then... isn't this a coincidence! This series of new series will be different from other Marvel American TV series including Iron Fist and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and in addition to actors of the magnitude of Tom Hiddleston and Olsen, although the budget of these series has not been announced, according to the same source, the new series will invest a lot of money and can even be compared with MCU movies. Each series will have about 6-8 episodes, Marvel Studios will produce the new series, and Kevin Feige will personally operate the development of the series. Such an expensive new plan for Disney's most profitable IP also proves how much Disney values its new streaming platform. Companies like Netflix and Amazon are quietly increasing their number of users, and Disney also hopes to not be left behind in this "reform" that can overturn Hollywood. However, apart from knowing that Disney Play will be launched in the second half of next year and that the cost will be lower than Netflix, other details are still unknown. In order to present the best quality content on its own streaming platform, Disney has stopped renewing its contracts on other platforms. It has currently lost at least millions of dollars in profits and has to bear the cost of developing new technologies. Previously announced new projects by Disney include a new American TV series of "Star Wars" directed by "Iron Man" and produced by "Happy Hogan" Jon Favreau; an American TV version of "High School Musical" and a live-action version of "Lady and the Tramp". Films such as "Captain Marvel" and the live-action version of "Dumbo" will be released only on Disney Play when they are released on Blu-ray discs after their theatrical run ends. None of the above projects are cheap. A Star Wars TV series might cost $100 million, while other web series might cost more than $25 million. However, Disney is known for its big spending. Currently, Disney's main competitor Netflix has 125 million subscribers worldwide. Excellent American TV series producers including Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story), Kenya Barris (Black-ish) and Shonda Rhimes (Grey's Anatomy) have been recruited by Disney and signed contracts. The screenwriters for the new Marvel series have not yet been decided. Previously, Marvel TV and Disney have been very interested in American TV series such as "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." produced by ABC and "Daredevil" produced by Netflix. However, according to reports, these series will remain under Marvel TV, while the new limited series will be under Marvel Films. It is reported that first-line heroes such as Iron Man and Captain America, who have already had solo movies, will no longer appear in the new series. Disney hopes to develop second-tier characters in the MCU. It hopes that through this move, Disney Play can attract more American comic fans. Neither Disney nor Marvel Studios has responded to this news. |
