Disney's live-action version of "Mulan" married a white male protagonist? Quickly refute the rumor

Disney's live-action version of "Mulan" has been rumored to have a white actor playing the male lead, which has caused an uproar. Fans of the classic animated version of "Mulan" urged Disney not to "whitewash" the casting (using white actors to play roles of other skin colors). An insider later refuted the rumor, saying that all the main characters will be Chinese.

The white male lead rumor started with an article posted online by someone who claimed to have obtained a script that Disney originally bought for sale, written by Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin. The script tells the story of a thirty-something European businessman who falls in love with Hua Mulan and decides to help the Chinese army in order to win her heart.

But in fact, this script is just a starting point. After buying the script, Disney has found Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, the screenwriters of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and "Jurassic World", to further rewrite the script.

A source close to the film provided a statement to Vulture to clarify the "whitewashing" rumors. The statement reads as follows:

"The script for sale was just a starting point for a future rewrite that would draw inspiration from the Hua Mulan folk song and Disney's 1998 animated version. Hua Mulan is and will remain the protagonist of the story, and all the main characters, including Mulan's love interest, are Chinese."

According to previous reports, Disney's live-action version of "Mulan" is scheduled to be released in North America in 3D format on November 2, 2018. Disney is currently searching for a Chinese actress from around the world to play the legendary heroine Mulan.

Like the 1998 animated version, the live-action version of Mulan is based on the Chinese historical heroine Hua Mulan, who disguised herself as a man to take her aging father's place in the army. With the help of her trusty guardian dragon Mushu, she became a skilled warrior and one of China's greatest heroines.
