DC Films Chief James Gunn: Superman sequel remains Warner's priority

Since becoming co-head of DC Studios, director James Gunn has had to clear up a lot of misinformation about his plans for DC projects, both TV series and movies. Rumors about canceled projects have frequently surfaced since he took over, including many that have been confirmed and unconfirmed, as well as ongoing projects.

On Twitter, Gunn talked about the most notable work that DC and Warner Bros. have missed in the past decade: the sequel to Man of Steel. Next year will be exactly ten years after the last Superman movie. Although Man of Steel received mixed reviews, it grossed over $660 million after its release in the summer of 2013. Gunn recently stated that a new movie starring Superman is still an important goal for DC Studios. He replied to a fan: "Superman is a big priority, even the most important project."

Interestingly, Warner Bros. employees have repeatedly claimed this for six years. Instead of making a Superman sequel, the studio head at the time gave Zack Snyder $70 million to complete his Justice League: Director's Cut. Warner Bros. is reportedly regretting this decision now. Instead, the highest-grossing film in the DC Cinematic Universe is Aquaman, which has currently grossed over $1.15 billion worldwide.

There are rumors that despite Henry Cavill's reappearance as Superman in the ending credits of Black Adam, potential sequels to Man of Steel and Black Adam will be cut. Shortly after the release of Black Adam, Cavill officially announced that he would return to play Superman and that he would continue to play him in the future.
