'Sandman' Cancelled by Netflix After Comic Book Creator Accused of Sexual Misconduct

The Sandman, the hit series based on Neil Gaiman's classic comic book, has been canceled by Netflix and its second season will be its last.

The Sandman premiered on Netflix in August 2022. The series is based on Neil Gaiman's comic of the same name and was developed by Gaiman, David S. Goyer and Alan Heinberg.

Netflix has now canceled The Sandman due to allegations of sexual misconduct against Gaiman, Variety reports. This is the latest project to be affected by the allegations against Gaiman. He also left the final season of Amazon's upcoming TV adaptation of Good Omens, and Disney paused development on a film based on his Graveyard Book. Most recently, Gaiman was fired by longtime comic book publisher Dark Horse Comics, and his Coraline musical was canceled.

Allan Heinberg, producer of The Sandman, explained: “The Sandman series has always focused solely on dream stories, and as early as 2022, when we looked back at the remaining dream material in the comics, we knew we only had enough stories to make the final season. We are very grateful to Netflix for bringing the team together again and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation, which we hope to present in a way that will surprise and delight loyal readers of the comics and fans of our shows.”

Netflix did not respond to Variety’s request for comment on the allegations against Gaiman.

The second season of "Sandman" has not yet announced a broadcast date, but it is expected to be launched sometime in 2025. The new season will follow the "Season of Mist" storyline of the original comics.
