According to Deadline, JJ Abrams' company Bad Robot will produce a new Star Trek movie, which will be directed by Toby Haynes, the director of Star Wars: Andor, and written by Seth Grahame-Smith. The new Star Trek movie will take place decades before the 2009 Star Trek reboot directed by JJ Abrams, and may be set in the same era as series such as Star Trek: Enterprise. The new film is reportedly part of a move that mimics Star Trek's current streaming strategy, which currently includes multiple series on the Paramount+ platform. Star Trek 4 is reportedly still in active development, but news on the film has been scarce since director Matt Shakman dropped out to helm Fantastic Four. The last Star Trek movie to be released was 2016's Star Trek Beyond, which IGN called "a rare Star Trek movie that appeals to both mainstream audiences and Roddenberry fans" in its review at the time. Star Trek 4 has been in preparation since around 2018, and it is said that at least three scripts are in development. It has experienced cancellations and restarts, and filming was originally scheduled to begin in late 2022. Meanwhile, the Star Trek franchise has thrived on Paramount Plus thanks to hits like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and Haynes’ Andor is proving there’s a market for more thoughtful sci-fi within the larger sci-fi franchises. |
