Director Gunn criticized the random cameos in superhero movies: forcing roles in them ruins the plot

Director James Gunn, the head of the new DC superhero movie universe, criticized the current superhero movie characters' "cameo" on social media and said that characters should make meaningful contributions to the overall narrative.

In response to a fan praising him for treating superheroes as independent characters rather than tools to serve fans, Gunn responded: "If a character is in the movie, they have to have a reason to be in the story."

However, Gunn also said that as long as they do not disrupt the narrative of the film itself, some small cameos are "acceptable": "I don't mind real small cameos - if it's just a glimpse or a moment, an easter egg... What bothers me is that they destroy an originally elegant story by forcing the role. They appear in the movie not because of the plot requirements, but for other reasons."

The upcoming new DC movie universe Superman: Legacy includes many characters, in addition to Superman and Lois, the villain Lex Luthor, there are other superheroes including the Engineer, Mr. Terrific and Hawkgirl. Director Gun confirmed on social media that there are other characters in the movie that have not been revealed, and asked: "Which single-protagonist movie doesn't have more than 10 characters with lines?"

He compared "Superman: Legacy" to Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," emphasizing that the film is very complex and that various characters will be intertwined in the protagonist's story.

Superman: Legacy is scheduled to be released on July 11, 2025.
