Hollywood writers and studios reach tentative agreement to end strike

The strike by the Writers Guild in Hollywood may be coming to an end. After more than 140 days of work stoppage, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) announced on Sunday night that they had reached a "tentative agreement" with major Hollywood studios on pay, working conditions, and more.

"We are very proud to say this is an exceptional agreement that delivers meaningful benefits and protections for all guild member screenwriters and writers," the WGA negotiating committee wrote in an email to members.

WGA leadership said it could not reveal details of the agreement until it is finalized, after which writers must vote to approve the deal. The guild said its leaders could end the strike as early as Tuesday once the contract is finalized and sent to members for a vote. The guild has now stopped all demonstrations.

The agreement was finalized after several nights of negotiations between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) mid-week and over the weekend.

The WGA first called for a strike on May 2 after negotiations between the WGA and AMPTP failed. The WGA wanted a new contract that included better streaming revenue, protections for writers' rooms, and protections around the use of artificial intelligence (AI), conditions that the AMPTP opposed.

While the writers' strike is coming to an end, actors are still on strike and Hollywood productions may remain at a standstill. The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), which represents about 160,000 members in the entertainment industry, has been on strike since July.
