Microsoft: Earning $100 billion will achieve general artificial intelligence!

Fast Technology reported today (December 27) that according to the secret agreement reached between Microsoft and OpenAI in 2023 disclosed by the media, if the AI system developed by OpenAI can achieve a profit of 100 billion US dollars, it will be regarded as having achieved the goal of general artificial intelligence (AGI).

Currently, OpenAI is planning to transform from a non-profit organization to a for-profit company and is negotiating with Microsoft on key issues such as shareholding ratio, cloud service provider status, intellectual property usage period, and revenue sharing.

But the biggest obstacle to this transformation comes from Microsoft, which has invested more than $13 billion in OpenAI and therefore has a huge say in the process.

According to the terms of the contract between OpenAI and Microsoft, once OpenAI successfully develops general artificial intelligence, the company has the right to terminate the agreement between the two parties, and Microsoft will stop using any new technologies subsequently developed by OpenAI.

What does it mean to achieve general artificial intelligence? OpenAI defines general artificial intelligence as artificial intelligence that can surpass humans in the "most economically valuable tasks."

But the definition is a bit vague, so Microsoft and OpenAI reached an undisclosed agreement last year.

The agreement stipulates that the achievement of general artificial intelligence depends on whether OpenAI can develop a system that generates total profits of about $100 billion for its earliest investors, including Microsoft.

This goal is estimated to be difficult to achieve in the short term. OpenAI is still losing billions of dollars each year. In September this year, the company told potential investors that it does not expect to achieve its first annual profit until 2029.
