"Super Mario Bros. Movie" performs well and breaks box office records around the world

According to Deadline, The Super Mario Bros. Movie broke several milestones and records in its debut. The film set the highest opening day record for an animated feature in history in 11 markets, including Germany, Spain, Argentina, Central America, and Austria.

As of yesterday, The Super Mario Bros. Movie had grossed $34.7 million internationally, bringing its single-day global total to $66.4 million, including Wednesday's domestic debut.

Here is the film's box office performance in different regions:

- Mexico: $5.9 million; the biggest debut ever for a Universal film and the second-biggest opening day for an animated film behind Toy Story 4

- United Kingdom: $4.8 million; best animated debut ever, highest-grossing of 2023, and highest-grossing Wednesday ever for a Universal film

-China: $4.7 million; this is the highest-grossing first-day box office for a Hollywood animated film since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, and the second-highest first-day box office for a film in 2023

- Germany: $2.8 million on Wednesday, Universal's best debut ever and a milestone for an animated film

- Spain: $2.2 million on Wednesday; biggest opening day for an animated feature ever; Avatar: The Way of Water and Doctor Strange 2 become the highest-grossing openings since the start of the coronavirus pandemic

- France: $2.1 million on Wednesday; biggest opening day of 2023, second-best animation behind Ice Age 2 and best for Illumination

Italy: $1.4 million on Wednesday, 70% of the market, the highest opening day for anime and video game adaptations in the spring

-Middle America: $1.3 million, the second-biggest opening after Avengers 4 and more than double the Minions and Despicable Me movies

- Australia: $1.1 million, the highest opening day of 2023, the highest ever for Illumination, and the highest April opening of all time
