DC executives explain the cancellation of "Batgirl": If it is released, it will hurt the brand

Recently, DC Studios co-head Peter Safran said in an interview with Variety that canceling the Batgirl movie was the right decision because if the film was released, it would hurt DC.

Safran said he still believes the decision to make the Batgirl movie was the right one. He believes the movie "cannot be released" and praised Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav for the decision to cancel the project.

"I actually think Zaslav and the team made a very bold and brave decision to cancel the movie because it would have hurt DC. It would have hurt the people involved," Safran said.

He went on to add that the story of the character Batgirl will still be included in DC's big plans in the future, but now is not the time: "I've seen the movie, and there are a lot of very talented people in front of and behind the camera. But that movie can't be released. Although sometimes things like this happen, that movie is definitely not allowed."

However, Safran said he would still love to work with Batgirl directors Adil El Arbi and Biall Fallah, and screenwriter Christina Hodson, at some point in the future: "Like I said, there are a lot of talented people involved, but the film can't be released. It can't compete in the theatrical market; it was made for the small screen. So again, I think while it wasn't an easy decision, it was the right decision to put it on hold."
