According to the Japanese daily Mantanweb, Shinkai Makoto's eighth animated film "Suzumeto no Tsuchiya" has grossed over 6.269 billion yen in Japan in 17 days since its premiere. The cumulative number of tickets sold for the film is 4.6 million. The film grossed 843 million yen over the weekend and sold 612,000 tickets in two days, ranking first over the weekend. The film debuted at number one on November 11, selling 1.33 million tickets and earning 1.88 billion yen in its first three days. The film sold 38.7% more tickets and earned 47.4% more than Makoto Shinkai's Your Name. The film grossed 127,796 million yen in its first three days. It also sold 14.8% more tickets and earned 14.4% more than Makoto Shinkai's previous film Weathering with You, setting the strongest first three-day momentum for a Makoto Shinkai film. The film tells the story of a 17-year-old girl Suzuya who embarks on a journey to close the "door" of disaster and is liberated and grows up in the process. Makoto Shinkai said that the three key points of this film are that it is a road movie around Japan, a story about "closing the door" rather than opening the door, and also giving the audience a reason to go to the cinema. He said that closing the door can mean ending or completing something. Makoto Shinkai's novel for the film was released on August 24. Ganjima Biography launched a manga adaptation of the film in Kodansha's monthly afternoon issue on October 25. |
