Netflix animation department lays off 30 people, no plan to slow down animation program production

As part of a wider "downsizing" of Netflix's animation division, the company is laying off employees. According to DEADLINE, 30 people will be laid off as part of this round of layoffs; Netflix confirmed the layoffs on its Widows.com website.

The layoffs are the first major move by Netflix's new animation heads Karen Toliver and Tracy Balthazzo, who were reportedly asked to streamline the team.

However, according to DEADLINE, Netflix has no plans to slow down its output of animated programming. Over the years, Netflix's animation works have been nominated for seven Oscars. Some of Netflix's upcoming animated films include Guillermo del Toro's "Pinocchio", the new "Wallace and Gromit" movie, and the new "Chicken Run" sequel movie.

This is just the latest round of layoffs at Netflix, which cut 150 jobs at its U.S. headquarters earlier this year, including 70 positions in its animation division.

Recently, The Wall Street Journal reported that Netflix, which has recently lost many subscribers and is facing a shareholder lawsuit as a result, is looking to control costs by hiring more junior employees, being more disciplined about cloud computing costs and reducing the freebies it gives its employees.
