Disney's live-action Pinocchio receives poor reviews

The live-action version of "Pinocchio", a strong collaboration between "Forrest Gump" director Robert Zemeckis and actor Tom Hanks, failed in word of mouth. After being released on Disney streaming media on September 8, the film only scored 5.2 points on IMDb (rated by 13,000 people), while the 1940 animated version scored 7.5 points (rated by 145,000 people).

The film's Rotten Tomatoes rating is only 29% (129 reviews), and the audience's popcorn rating is only 36%. The negative reviews from the media mainly focus on the fact that the film is simply a remake of the 1940 cartoon and has no new ideas.

The Atlantic: The new film fails to capture the charm of the original, with the same dull eyes as the other motion-capture characters in Zemeckis's films.

The Hollywood Reporter: This well-intentioned work did not succeed. Disney seems to be doing its routine of "Well, we're going to remake all the cartoons into live-action" and hopes that the audience will watch it just for the sake of the classic remake.

CNN: Pinocchio is like being washed up on a deserted island. The whole movie is so uninspired and there is nothing new. It's like a pale remake of the 1940 classic movie.
