In a recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Neil Gaiman, the author of the classic American comic "Sandman", confessed that he was primarily responsible for the cancellation of the film version of "Sandman". He said that he had leaked a script for the movie version of "Sandman" to the media, and he thought the movie version of "Sandman" was poorly adapted. “I sent the script to Ain’t It Cool News, and people knew about it,” Gaiman said. “I thought, ‘I wonder what Ain’t It Cool News is going to think about this script that they’re sending anonymously.’ They wrote a brilliant article saying it was the worst script they’d ever received. Overnight, the movie disappeared.” At that time, the script for the film adaptation of "Sandman" was written by Jon Peters. “It’s the worst script I’ve ever read,” Gaiman said. “A guy from Jon Peters’ office called me up and he said, ‘Neil, did you get a chance to read the script we sent you?’ And I said, ‘Well, yes. Yes, I did. I didn’t read the whole thing, but I read enough.’ And he said, ‘So, it’s very good. Huh?’ I said, ‘Well, no. It’s really not great.’ He said, ‘Oh, come on. There’s got to be something in it that you like.’ I said, ‘There’s nothing in it that I like. There’s nothing in it that I like. It’s the worst script I’ve ever read. It’s not just the worst Sandman script. It’s the worst script I’ve ever been sent.’” Several other versions of “The Sandman” were aborted before filming began. The rights were then sold to Netflix, whose series debuted online earlier this month. |
