John Woo's "Hard Boiled" remake confirms black actor Omar Syed

Universal Pictures announced today that Omar Sy, the actor of "Jurassic World" and "The Intouchables", will star in the remake of "A Better Tomorrow". The original director John Woo will return to direct the film, which will be released on Peacock streaming media in 2023.

John Woo, 76, took a break due to cancer after "The Hunt" in 2017. He returned to Hollywood this spring and first directed the new film "Silent Night" starring Joel Kinnaman. The film has no dialogue and tells the story of a father's revenge for his dead son.

Now, the company is planning to cooperate with Universal Pictures on three projects, with the first one being the remake of "A Better Tomorrow". The film is co-written by Matthew Stuaiken, the screenwriter of "10 Cloverfield Lane", and Josh Campbell, Eran Creevy, and Brian Helgeland.

"Hard Boiled" is a classic work by John Woo, starring Chow Yun-fat, Danny Lee and Sally Yeh, and was released in Hong Kong in 1989. The film tells the story of a killer, Xiao Zhuang (Chow Yun-fat), who accidentally injured a singer, Jenny (Sally Yeh), during an assassination attempt, causing her to almost go blind. He felt deeply guilty and had been secretly protecting and helping her.
