Disney has another Star Wars trilogy in the works, and some fans are getting a little tired of the constant announcements and lack of releases. The total number of films in the pipeline now stands at 14, with only one having a confirmed release date — let alone a trailer or title. "X-Men" producer Simon Kinberg is writing and producing a "Star Wars" trilogy that will be the beginning of a new saga, scheduled to be released alongside a host of other announced films. But Disney hasn't had a new film in the franchise since 2019's critically panned "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," and these days, news of a new "Star Wars" movie doesn't make many fans excited, but instead makes them roll their eyes. That's because Disney has now announced more than a dozen movies, many of which have no titles, release dates, clips, casts or anything else to indicate the movies are actually coming. Disney has also canceled several movies during this period, such as a movie from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and another trilogy from Game of Thrones producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. That leaves a sequel called "The Mandalorian vs. Gugu," a sequel to "Star Wars 9" starring Daisy Ridley, a film about the origins of the Force directed by James Mangold, the director of "Logan" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Airbender," and a film about the climax of "Star Wars" series such as "Ahsoka" directed by Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni. There's also a movie from Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi, a movie from Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy, an entire trilogy from Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, a Lando Calrissian movie starring Donald Glover, and a movie from Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins. As if those 11 movies weren't enough, Disney is now working with Kinberg on this new trilogy. "I can't wait for the next two years to go by without hearing anything about this project, only to finally get the big and exciting news that Kinberg is leaving and Lucasfilm is looking for a new writer," a user named "obert-wan-kenobert" mocked in a Reddit thread discussing the trilogy. "Here we go again," said another. "So, how long will it take for this trilogy to be cancelled?" asked another. Another post listed 14 movies that are apparently coming soon. "I'm really looking forward to that untitled Star Wars project, but I wouldn't mind if that untitled Star Wars project doesn't end up happening," said a user named "laserbrained." "It's really hard for me to take these announcements seriously when we have absolutely no progress on any of the rumored movies," said another user, "ididshave," in another post. The Mandalorian & Goguryeo movie is the only one that is certain to happen, as Disney did release footage and even a release date at this year's D23 event, but fans believe the three films announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023 are also likely. That includes the next most-anticipated film, the Ridley-starring "Star Wars: Episode IX," which follows Rey Skywalker as he rebuilds the Jedi Order 15 years later. That film seemed to be progressing steadily, with Ridley and director Samine Obaid-Chinoy commenting frequently on it, but the film was reportedly left without a writer in October after the departure of "Peaky Blinders" creator Steven Knight. Mangold and Filoni's films are the other two, though there hasn't actually been any news about either since the announcement, although Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said at the time that both movies were "well along" in development. Elsewhere, Waititi's film is apparently progressing slowly but steadily, as it's not expected to hit theaters until around 2030. Levy's film is in a similar situation, though it reportedly found a screenwriter in July, and Johnson's trilogy is not in active development. Lando was originally planned as a spinoff, but is now being developed into a sequel, and similarly has no major updates. Finally, Jenkins had a Rogue Squadron movie announced, but it was canceled because she was busy with Wonder Woman 3. But since that movie was also canceled, Jenkins said she still owed Disney a Star Wars script, which also raised hopes that Rogue Squadron could be redeveloped. |
