Lucasfilm has confirmed that Rian Johnson's trilogy of Star Wars films has been put on hold as the director (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Knives Out) is "very busy" with other projects. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Lucasfilm president Kennedy updated Rian Johnson on the progress of his new Star Wars trilogy of films, which was announced in 2017. Johnson will be directing and writing the first film in the trilogy, but little has been said about it since the announcement in 2017, as the director has apparently been tied up in other projects. Kennedy said: "Ryan is busy working on Knives Out and a number of other films he's working on with Netflix." Last year, Netflix spent $450 million to buy the rights to the two sequels of "Knives Out", and screenwriter and director Rian Johnson returned. This directly led to Johnson's "Star Wars" trilogy being temporarily shelved. Kennedy even hinted that the Star Wars trilogy format might be scrapped in favor of a "more enduring narrative." In an interview with Vanity Fair, Kennedy talked about the overall plan for the Star Wars film franchise. She admitted that Lucasfilm is forging a new path after restructuring and planning for the future. The shift to television seems to have affected their film projects, as she hinted that trilogies may no longer be the best way to structure the story. Although Johnson's trilogy is on hold, the Star Wars movie directed by the director of Thor 3 and Thor 4 looks to be the first to be released in the near future. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, directed by Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, is "even further away" and was shelved indefinitely last year, while Kevin Feige's Star Wars movie has been in limbo, with Kennedy noting that there is "no concrete news to reveal yet." |
