Doctor Who announces black star as 14th Doctor

Today (May 9), the official "Doctor Who" posted on Twitter that the 14th Doctor will be played by Ncuti Gatwa, who played "Eric" in "Sex Education".

Gatwa said he felt honored but also pressured to play the 14th Doctor. He said: "This show and character mean a lot to many people around the world (including me), and my previous 13 were all talented people who handled this unique responsibility and privilege with great enthusiasm. I will do my best to do this, and it feels like a dream come true to work with Russell T Davies."

Shuti Gatwa, 29, is the first black actor to star in the Doctor Who series. The 13th Doctor, Jodie Whittaker, will play the Doctor for the last time in this fall's special episode. The show's operator has also been replaced, with Russell T. Davies, a familiar figure in the series, returning next year to replace Chris Chibnall.
