Officially confirmed that the classic song "Barbie Girl" will not appear in the movie

Warner Bros. shared news of the Greta Gerwig-directed Barbie movie this week, releasing a still of Margot Robbie, dolled up and driving a gorgeous car that looks like something out of a dream. The image has many people interested in the movie: Partly because of the bright, colorful, "fun" vibe the photo gives off, many fans began speculating about what kind of music Barbie might play, and Aqua's 1997 song "Barbie Girl" was the most discussed by fans. But Variety reports that people hoping to hear "Barbie Girl" on the soundtrack will be sorely disappointed.

Lene Nystrøm, manager of Aqua's lead singer Ulrich Møller-Jørgensen, said of "Barbie Girls," "The song will not be used in the movie." Møller-Jørgensen did not elaborate on why "Barbie Girls" will not appear in the Barbie live-action film, but Variety notes that it may have something to do with the trademark infringement lawsuit Mattel filed against the band in 1997. In addition to claiming copyright infringement, Mattel argued that the sexual innuendos of Aqua's song harmed the Barbie brand and the company's marketing plans. Ultimately, Mattel's initial lawsuit was dismissed by a lower court, and its subsequent appeal to the Supreme Court was also rejected. It's safe to say that the toymaker's feelings about the song haven't changed.

Barbie is set to hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
