Netflix was responsible for launching a number of Marvel TV series before the launch of the Disney Plus service, but soon, users will no longer be able to watch Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, The Punisher or The Defenders on Netflix. Earlier today, news of the impending removal appeared on Netflix's official "What's on Netflix" page after viewers noticed the show's logo in the Netflix app. Anonymous Netflix and Disney spokespersons have confirmed to The Verge that Netflix's copyright license will end on February 28. Polygon notes that this transition comes after several characters from the Wan Fei show appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Charlie Cox brought his Daredevil character to Spider-Man: No Homecoming, while Vincent D'Onofrio played Kingpin in the Disney Plus series Hawkeye. This ended a partnership that began in 2012 and first hit our TV screens in 2015 with the premiere of Daredevil on Netflix. By 2018, all shows had been cancelled for renewal. As now-Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos pointed out in a 2017 interview with Reuters: "This is why we started the originals business five years ago." No word from either party on what might happen to these shows after they leave Netflix, though my guess is that they'll return in some form. |
