Shang-Chi is the first pandemic-era film to gross over $200 million at the U.S. box office

The pandemic has obviously hit theaters around the world pretty hard, and the U.S. is no exception, and the success of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings proves that theaters are still holding up. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Marvel Studios film became the first movie to break the $200 million mark at the U.S. box office.

Unlike other Disney releases in the spring and early summer, Shang-Chi premiered only in theaters. Black Widow, Jungle Cruise and Cruella were released simultaneously on Disney+ Premier Access and in theaters, raising questions about their box office performance.

THR pointed out that Shang-Chi's performance was not only quite good by the standards of the epidemic, but also performed well in its own right. The film set a new Labor Day record with a four-day opening box office of 94.7 million and became the second highest-grossing film in 2021, second only to Marvel's Black Widow.

Shang-Chi's global box office revenue has exceeded $360 million, and is on its way to Black Widow's $378.4 million box office revenue.
