"Minari" director Lee Isaac Chung will no longer direct the Hollywood live-action "Your Name" movie. According to Deadline, Lee Isaac Chung left the project due to scheduling conflicts, leaving Paramount Pictures to find a replacement. The studio is actively looking for a new director and has contacted "several potential suitors," though there is no word yet on who the candidates are. The Hollywood live-action adaptation of Makoto Shinkai's animated film will be produced by Bad Robot Films' J.J. Abrams and the original film's producer, Genki Kawamura, while the script will be written by Arrival screenwriter Eric Heisserer. Toho will be responsible for distributing the film in Japan, while Paramount will be responsible for bringing the film to theaters in other regions. Shinkai initially expressed his love for live-action films, saying, "When a work like this is incorporated into Hollywood filmmaking, we may see new possibilities that we were completely unaware of before - I have high expectations for live-action films," although he later added that he was "not too interested" in how this would actually be handled. Lee Isaac Chung joins the project shortly after his acclaimed film Minari won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at last year’s Sundance Film Festival. He received numerous other awards and nominations for his work on this year’s film, including a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. |
