"Black Widow" lost to "Space Jam 2" in North American box office and ranked second

The second weekend of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's release in North America, the box office of "Black Widow" was only 26.5 million U.S. dollars, a drop of nearly 70% compared with the first weekend, causing the film to fall behind Warner's live-action CG film "Space Jam 2" (31.65 million U.S. dollars) in its first week of release. The American Association of Theater Owners attributed the box office plunge of "Black Widow" to Disney's strategy of choosing to release it on streaming media on the same day of its release.

After only one week at the top, Black Widow was surpassed by Space Jam: A New Legacy, which opened in North America last weekend and topped the list with $31.65 million. Black Widow's second week box office was $26.25 million, a 67% drop from its first week.

The National Association of Theatre Owners issued a press release, analyzing that in the second week of Black Widow's release in North America, the Friday-Saturday box office dropped by 41%, and the weekly box office dropped by 67%, due to piracy and Disney's simultaneous release of the film on Disney+, which will directly affect the window period for subsequent home online viewing. The association also said that the practice of "Black Widow" being released on Disney+ as a separate payment was not a new way to make money, but rather a revenue generated by bringing forward the traditional pay-per-view window period.

"Black Widow" was released in North America on July 9, 2021, and "Space Jam: A New Legacy" was released in North America on July 16, 2021.
