Mutsu Enmei-ryu Gaiden Shura no Toki - Review and Recommendation

"Mutsu Enmei-ryu Gaiden Shura no Toki" is a spectacular historical action anime based on the original work by Masatoshi Kawahara, and was broadcast on TV Tokyo in 2004. This work depicts the story of the successors of the legendary martial art "Mutsu Enmei-ryu", which has been passed down since the Heian period, facing off against sword masters from each era. The series, which consists of 26 episodes, is divided into three parts: the Miyamoto Musashi edition, the Kan'ei Imperial Tournament edition, and the stormy end of the Edo period edition, and unfolds tense battles and drama from each era.

Story and Characters

The first part, "Miyamoto Musashi", is set in early Edo period Japan and depicts the confrontation between Miyamoto Musashi and Mutsu Yakumo. Musashi is known as a master of two-sword style swordsmanship and continues his journey in search of strong opponents, while Mutsu Yakumo is a mysterious warrior who fights with bare hands. This confrontation is not just a contest of strength, but contains deep themes that question bushido and the very way of life. In particular, the story of the growth of Miyamoto Iori, Musashi's pupil, is not to be missed. With the teachings of his master in his heart, he continues his journey while searching for his own path.

The second part, "Kan'ei Imperial Tournament Edition," depicts the machinations of Yagyu Munenori and Nankoubou Tenkai, set in the Imperial Tournament of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Miyamoto Iori, who inherited Musashi's techniques, and a mysterious girl named Maru who calls herself Mutsu appear here, and their goals and battles are at the center of the story. The showdown between Yagyu Jubei and Mutsu Tento is particularly impressive, depicting not only swordsmanship but also psychological warfare and strategic tactics.

The third part, "The Stormy Bakumatsu Era," depicts the friendship and struggles of Mutsu Izumi and Sakamoto Ryoma against the backdrop of the turmoil of the end of the Edo period. Izumi confronts Shinsengumi's Okita Souji and Hijikata Toshizo, becoming a major force in changing the times, while Ryoma establishes the Kaientai and works hard to establish the Satsuma-Choshu Alliance and restore imperial rule to the Emperor. In this part, historical events and the dramas of individual characters intertwine, drawing viewers in.

Animation and Music

Studio Comet, the animation studio, has realistically depicted the backgrounds and battle scenes of each era. In particular, the swordplay movements and unarmed techniques are meticulously drawn, creating a strong visual impact. Character design by Hamazu Takehiro also brings out the individuality of each character.

In terms of music, the powerful voice of Sakura, who sings the opening theme "identity," and the gentle voice of Akane Osawa, who sings the ending theme "Natsuhiboshi," add to the atmosphere of the story. In particular, the opening theme "identity" heightens the tension of the battles, while the ending theme "Natsuhiboshi" has the effect of giving the viewer a breather.

Recommended points

"Mutsu Enmei-ryu Gaiden Shura no Toki" is especially recommended for history buffs and action anime fans. The backgrounds and historical events of each era are depicted realistically, drawing viewers into the era. In addition, the battle scenes, which make full use of swordsmanship and unarmed techniques, are impressive and provide plenty of visual enjoyment.

Furthermore, this work focuses on human drama, such as character growth, friendship, and master-disciple relationships. In particular, the story of Miyamoto Iori's growth and the friendship between Mutsu Izumi and Sakamoto Ryoma will touch the hearts of viewers. This work, where historical events and the dramas of individual characters intersect, will leave a deep impression on viewers.

Overall, "Mutsu Enmei-ryu Gaiden Shura no Toki" is a wonderful mix of history, action, and human drama. This anime offers a lot of excitement and emotion to its viewers, and is definitely one to watch.
