Sawaki Soemon Naoyasu has a unique constitution that allows him to see bacteria in the air. The son of a bean sprout (seed koji) shop owner, he comes to Tokyo with his childhood friend, Yuki Hotaru, the son of a sake brewer, to enter agricultural university. On the day of the entrance ceremony, the two go to meet a man named Itsuki, who was mentioned in a note from his grandfather. Itsuki is a slightly eccentric old professor who can't stop talking about bacteria once he starts. After that, Sawaki starts frequenting Itsuki's laboratory, and while he is exposed to the new world of "bacteria" and "fermentation," he finds himself getting caught up in all sorts of turmoil due to his encounters with the slightly eccentric people who surround him...
