Hyogo no Ojisan - Hyogo no Ojisan Review

Released as an OVA in 2008, "Hyogo no Ojisan" left a strong impression on viewers with its unique black humor and social satire. Directed by Yoshida Kenjiro, the work was produced by Zuiyo and distributed by Columbia Music Entertainment. Each episode is 60 minutes long and self-contained, allowing viewers to enjoy the story in one sitting.

The story is simple: a charismatic man from Hyogo gives "love" to people in need. However, the background to the story depicts serious issues facing modern society, such as debt, inequality, education, waste issues, global warming, the working poor, violence and crime, war, political corruption, and the stagnation of capitalism. By satirizing these issues in a humorous yet sharp way, the show gives viewers deep insight.

The protagonist, Uncle Hyogo, is played by Takashi Matsuo. His unique character and acting ability enhance the appeal of this work. The cast is also full of great actors, including Shota Shunputei as Aono (Blue), Mayumi Sato as Mina, Shinpei Ichikawa as Dai, Tetsuhiro Ikeda as Golgo Juzo, and Masako Chiba as Tadasu Kiyomi. Their acting further enhances the dark humor of the work.

The main staff is also impressive, with Yasunari Suda in charge of the composition and scenario, Shohei Murai as CG director, Osamu Tezuka in charge of music and sound, and Shigemi Takahashi in charge of the drunken role. In particular, Osamu Tezuka's music is an important element in enhancing the atmosphere of the work.

The subtitles are made up of 13 stories, each dealing with a different theme. For example, "Days of Blue" depicts the daily life of Aono (Blue), "When You Wish Upon a Shooting Star" depicts children's dreams, "The Joy of Labor" questions the meaning of labor, and "Absolute Violence" satirizes the issue of violence. Through these subtitles, the work depicts social issues from multiple perspectives.

Related works include "Hyogo no Ojisan TV Version" and "Hyogo no Ojisan Bonus Footage." These works, like the OVA version, feature black humor and social satire. In particular, the bonus footage includes episodes and character backstories that were not included in the OVA version.
