Orient - A new heroic tale from the Warring States period

The TV anime series "Orient," which aired from January 6 to March 24, 2022, is an epic story set in Japan during the Warring States period. The original work is a manga serialized in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine by Shinobu Ohtaka, and it tells the story of samurai fighting for freedom in Hinomoto, which is under the control of demon gods. The anime was produced by A.C.G.T under the direction of Tetsuya Yanagisawa, and was completed with a stellar cast and staff.

story

The time is the Sengoku period in Hinomoto. The sudden appearance of the "Oni-god" killed all the Sengoku warlords who were fighting for supremacy, and the human world came to an end. 150 years later, there are people who continue to fight for freedom against the rule of the Oni-god. Their name is the "Samurai Corps." When they were young, Musashi and Kojiro admired the image of samurai that Kojiro's father told them about, and they vowed to dream of forming the "strongest samurai Corps." However, in a town where demons are worshiped as gods, samurai are considered evil by the people. Musashi could not bring himself to say "I want to be a samurai" to fit in with the atmosphere around him, and Kojiro was also shunned by the people as the son of a samurai. One day, Musashi, who was conflicted about his way of life, saw the image of an ogre emotionlessly tearing a human apart. Faced with this truth, Musashi decides to face the ogre, who boasts overwhelming power, in order to fulfill his dream with Kojiro.

Commentary

"Orient" is the long-awaited anime adaptation of the latest work by Otaka Shinobu, which is currently being serialized in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine. Set in a turbulent era in which the hegemony of Hinomoto has shifted from "humans" to "demons" due to an invasion by demons, the story follows Musashi and Kojiro as they vow to achieve their dream of forming the "strongest samurai group" and set out to defeat the demons. A luxurious cast including Yuuma Uchida as Musashi and Soma Saito as Kojiro will be appearing, and this classic battle action story is about to begin.

Main Characters

・Musashi
A boy born into a farming family in Tatsuyama Town. He lost his parents at a young age, but was later taken in by Kojiro Kanemaki's father, Jisai. Perhaps due to the environment he grew up in, he is a man who reads the mood and tries to fit in with those around him. He currently lives as the top student at the mining school, keeping to himself and fitting in with those around him. However, deep in his heart burns a burning desire to fulfill the dream he swore to his friend Kojiro when they were young: to form the strongest "band of warriors" together.
・Musashi (Awakened version)
The awakened form of the obsidian goddess that lies dormant within Musashi.
・KOJIRO KANEMAKI
A boy who is the only samurai in Tatsuyama Town. After the death of his father, Kanemaki Jisai, he lives alone in a rundown hut on the outskirts of town. As a hated samurai, he has been persecuted by the townspeople, but he has grown up with Musashi, the only one who has treated him without discrimination since childhood, as if they were brothers. Perhaps because of his environment, he has a somewhat detached and cool-headed personality, and shows a cold attitude when Musashi invites him to form a "samurai group," but what is his true intention...?
・Tsugumi Hattori
A samurai girl who belongs to the "Kosameda Samurai Corps" led by Kosameda Hideo. Her fighting skills are solid, and even Musashi and Kojiro acknowledge them. When in trouble, she can take the enemy by surprise using a "certain method" taught to her by her older sister. She has the temperament of a spoiled youngest child, and is always dependent on others. She is especially attached to and obeys her adoptive father, Hideo.
・Michiru Saruwatari
She is the princess of the Saruwatari Bushidan, an affiliate of the Uesugi Alliance. She is so cute that she makes Musashi, who likes older women, fall in love with her. However, she is shy and calls herself a hikikomori. She says she cannot join in conversations with more than three people. On her father's orders, she was heading to the port of Harima to take part in a decisive battle that would decide the fate of the country, when she met Musashi and his friends.
・NAOTORA TAKEDA
He is the leader of the "Takeda Samurai Corps." Accompanied by unique warriors such as Sanada Seishi and Yamamoto Shunrai, he travels around the country in a flying, mobile "castle," fighting every day to take back Hinomoto from the hands of the "Demon Gods." His abilities and bright, cheerful personality have earned him the respect of his fellow members, who adore him like an older brother. However, Musashi seems to feel some resentment towards Naotora's personality.
・Aoshi Sanada
A young man who is a member of the "Takeda Samurai Corps." He is one of the members who admires the leader of the group, Takeda Naotora.
・SHUNRAI YAMAMOTO
A female member of the "Takeda Samurai Corps." She can restrain enemies with her green whip-like attacks. Like Aoshi, she is one of the members who admires the leader of the Corps, Takeda Naotora.
・Tatsuomi Uesugi
He is one of the "Five Great Generals," known as the strongest in Hinomoto, and the leader of the "Uesugi Samurai Corps," which unites the Uesugi Alliance. He has been friends with Takeda Naotora, another of the "Five Great Generals," since childhood. He places great importance on family and lineage, and is very cherishing of those he recognizes as family. On the other hand, he also has a ruthless side, and will easily discard anyone outside his family. He has gathered his warriors at the port of Harima to defeat one of the most powerful "Demon Gods."
・KANETATSU NAOE
A senior vassal in charge of accounting for the Uesugi samurai. He likes things to be in their proper place, and is usually swamped with paperwork. His small stature and dull appearance give him a hard-to-look-like samurai image, but he is loved by his subordinates and is also trusted by his lord, Tatsuomi. In fact, his wives have run away from him and he has been divorced seven times.
・MASAKI AMAKASU
He is a member of the "Uesugi Samurai Corps" and a subordinate of Kaneryū. He has a straightforward and easygoing personality, and is often scolded by Kaneryū, who is very strict about everything. While Masaki himself worries about the inflexible Kaneryū, he respects him more than anyone else.
・Katsumi Amako
He is the son of the head of the Amako Samurai Corps, which was based on Awaji Island. He was raised as the heir to the family from a young age, so he is very caring and has a strange tolerance, contrary to his rational appearance. The members of the Amako Samurai Corps call him "Young Lord" and love him.
・KIJINOSUKE NOGUCHI
A young man who is extremely weak when it comes to strong people and authority. Because he is small and not very good looking, he is rarely seen as a samurai. However, he pretends to be an intelligent man, as he speaks a little Nanban language and is well-informed about the inner workings of the "Uesugi samurai group."
・Shiro Inukai
A mysterious samurai who belongs to an unknown samurai group. He calls himself "a pet dog with no name to give away." He is an avid sword lover, and when surrounded by his collection of swords, he calls them beautiful and takes pleasure in them. He is a mysterious person whose conversation seems to flow smoothly, yet somehow does not. His favorite food is pheasant.
・SEIROKU INUKAWA
He is one of the "Eight Obsidian Men", a mysterious group that opposes the samurai. He is highly tactical and uses various strategies to achieve his goals. He also has a friendly side, such as when he invites his fellow "Eight Obsidian Men" member, Inukai Shiro, out drinking with him. He carries three demon swords on his waist.
・NANAO INUSAKA
A girl of unknown samurai affiliation who accompanies Inukai Shiro. She calls Shiro "master" and takes care of him in various ways, while calmly and accurately remarking on his behalf. She seems to be interested in Musashi, who was kind to her when they first met. Although she appears to be a reliable person, she actually has some gaps...
・YATARO INUDA
He is one of the mysterious group "The Obsidian Eight". He has an arrogant personality and is ruthless, even if he is a family member, and will immediately discard them if he judges them to be of no use. On the other hand, he shows a servile attitude towards strong opponents such as Shiro and Seiroku. He talks to Nanao in a sweet voice, but Nanao herself finds him creepy.
・HIDEO KOSAMEDA
The leader of the Koameda Samurai Corps. He has been entrusted with the area around Samidare Castle by Tokugawa. He considers the people of the samurai corps to be his family, and he takes a special interest in Tsugumi, who lost her family and is left all alone, as his "daughter." At first glance he seems like a friendly, good-natured person, but behind his smile, a cruel side can be seen.
・JISAI KANEMAKI
Kojiro's father. In Tatsuyama Town, he was persecuted by the townspeople as a descendant of a samurai who was considered to be evil and cruel. He lived with the young Kojiro in a rundown house on the outskirts of town, and for a time he also looked after Musashi, but he has since passed away. He is characterized by a large scratch on his face.
・Goddess of Obsidian
A mysterious female being sleeping inside Musashi. She is the master of sword energy, able to draw it and use it freely.

A picture scroll that belonged to Kojiro's father, Kanemaki Jisai. It describes demons, the history of the samurai, and the samurai's mission.

- The sword-hunting samurai kill the owner of the Onitetsuto in order to steal its power.
A ritual to be able to use the Onitetsuto. If the Onitetsuto recognizes one as its master, one can use the sword. There is a sense of the sword entering one's body, and some people are shown events from the past.
The leader of the Kanemaki Samurai Group was Kanemaki Kojiro. Members of the group were Musashi and Hattori Tsugumi. Like the Takeda Samurai Group and the Koameda Samurai Group, the name of the group included the family name, so the "Kanemaki" in "Kanemaki Kojiro" was added.
・Demon The most powerful of the demons. He has overwhelming power compared to the other demons. A giant red demon, Enku Tengu, has appeared in Tatsuyama Town.
- Onitetsu: Pieces of the demon's body. When a demon dies and its body shatters into pieces, iron sand appears. Onitetsu has a mysterious power, and the samurai use it to fight demons.

・Black Demon God
The first demon god appeared in Hinomoto 150 years ago. Currently, it fills half of the land of Hinomoto.
Five great generals: Five warriors known as the strongest in Japan. They are said to be the ones closest to unifying the country.
・Koromo Oni: Blue low-level demons called "Koromo". Each one is weak, but when they gather in a group and surge forward, they exert destructive power like a giant tsunami.
・If the soul color sword test is successful, gemstone wings will appear from all over the body, and the color of the stone is called the soul color. There are five soul colors: blue, green, yellow, white, and red. They are called blue sword users and red sword users.
・The True Corner Kaleidoscope Musashi received as a consolation prize from Takeda Naotora. If you look through it, you can see demons. A tool used to find the location where demons appear.
Daito Mine: A mine in Mimasaka (near present-day Okayama Prefecture). Musashi and his friends head there after hearing that a blue demon appears.
Tatsuyama Town, Aki, where Musashi and his friends were born and raised. There is a mine there, and demons are worshipped as gods.
・Unify the world The sacred treasures return to the hands of the strongest warrior who defeated the strongest demon. That is... unify the world (from the picture scroll).
・When the sword is held by the handle, it is emitted from the body and the sword. ・Nora Oni A low-level wild demon, like the Wood Spirit Oni (single unit). Weak.
-There is a port where samurai from the Harima Uesugi alliance gather.
・Samurai Kojiro is a great criminal who resists the rule of demons in Ryuzan Town and is hated by the people. However, he is actually the only person who can stand up to the demons. Kojiro is a descendant of a samurai.
・Samurai Group In order to take back the human world from the demons, they continue to fight against demons. They move towards the demons in a flying castle called a "mobile fortress." There are various samurai groups, and the leader of the Takeda samurai group is Takeda Naotora.
