The number of female directors in Hollywood broke the record in 2020, and 16% of the directors of the 100 highest-grossing films were women

According to foreign media Variety, a report from the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University pointed out that among the 100 high-grossing films in Hollywood in 2020, 16% were directed by women, exceeding 12% in 2019 and 4% in 2018, a record number.

Typical representatives of female directors are two DC blockbusters: "Wonder Woman 1984" directed by Patty Jenkins and "Birds of Prey" directed by Cathy Yan. This does not include big-budget films directed by women that have been postponed due to the epidemic, such as Zhao Ting's "Eternals" and Cate Shortland's "Black Widow".

The study also shows that among the 100 highest-grossing films in 2020, female producers accounted for 28% and female executive producers accounted for 21%, both up two percentage points from last year. Female photographers accounted for 3%, up one percentage point from last year. Female editors accounted for 18% and female screenwriters accounted for 12%, down eight percentage points and five percentage points from last year, respectively.

Martha Lauzer, director of the research center, said: The situation is indeed improving, but the gender imbalance in Hollywood filmmakers is still quite serious.
