Netflix announced that it would film "Water Margin" and was criticized by domestic netizens

Recently Netflix announced that it will shoot a movie called "The Water Margin", which is described as " a futuristic action-adventure legendary blockbuster based on a classic Chinese literary work, full of glory, romance and conspiracy, exploring loyalty, leadership and our responsibility to face social issues at personal cost."

Netflix has also confirmed the director of the film, which will be directed by Japanese director Shinsuke Sato (Kingdom, Treasure Island, and Gantz). Matt Sand (Deepwater 40) will be the screenwriter. Eric Newman and Bryan Unkeless will be the producers.

As one of the four great classical novels in China, Water Margin has been made into film and television works many times. The TV series include the Shandong TV version of Water Margin, the 1998 CCTV version of Water Margin, and the 2011 new version of Water Margin. The movies shot include Water Margin: A True Hero (starring Tony Leung and Joey Wong), The Three Ruan Clan, Shi Qian, and Wu Song.

Most domestic film and television works are shot in accordance with the original works, but Netflix's upcoming "Water Margin" deviates from the story background setting. Many people think it is worth looking forward to, but more netizens have expressed doubts and concerns.

Regarding the level of screenwriter Matt Sand, many netizens complained that the quality of his works was uneven. Director Sato Shinsuke shot "Kingdom", which was set in the Warring States Period of China and tells the story of Li Xin, a young man from the Qin State. The Douban score of the film is only 6.4 points. Perhaps Sato Shinsuke is very interested in Chinese history and culture, but the works he shot are not so satisfactory.
