Finn actor in new Star Wars trilogy says his role is too different from that of white actors and Disney is racist

The new Star Wars trilogy introduces a new character, Stormtrooper Finn, played by black British actor John Boyega. In an interview with British GQ magazine, John Boyega said that Disney's treatment of his character in the film was inappropriate compared to his white co-stars, and he believes that his character has "subtle differences" in appearance and voice from white characters.

In an interview with British GQ magazine, John Boyega reflected on his time playing Finn, talking about Disney's promotion of the character and how he felt his portrayal in the scripts of the new Star Wars trilogy was "much more important" than what was actually presented in the film's plot, especially compared to other characters.

John Boyega also acknowledged that other people of color suffered the same treatment in the new Star Wars trilogy, specifically mentioning the experiences of Naomi Ackie, Kelly Marie Tran and Oscar Isaac, who he said were marginalized because Disney tended to give "all the nuances" to the white actors they worked with.

As the interview circulated on social media, John Boyega hoped that netizens would read the entire interview so that his point of view could be clearly understood. He wrote on Twitter: "These conversations and what I shared were not a political persecution. This was about a clear understanding of anger, and that expressions of anger can be seen as selfish, destructive, and self-indulgent. Obviously hope for change for the better. In short. I said what I needed to say. Love you guys sincerely, and your support is amazing."

John Boyega later accepted interviews with Variety and other media, in which he publicly complained that Finn, played by him in Star Wars 9, had the "least presence" and that he had been having "honest conversations" with Disney executives because the image of Finn in the script was "much more important" than the actual plot of the film. He also said that the film company needs to make its position clear and "support actors when their casting is strongly opposed, especially when it comes to racial issues."
