More Lion King movies are on the way. According to THR, Oscar-winning Moonlight director Barry Jenkins will direct a prequel to Disney's 2019 film The Lion King, and screenwriter Jeff Nathanson has completed a draft of the prequel.

The 2019 film "The Lion King," directed by Jon Favreau ("Iron Man's Bodyguard"), was a re-creation of the 1994 animated classic that used unique technology to create realistic animals and African landscapes, and starred Donald Glover and Beyoncé Knowles as the voices of Simba and Nala, respectively. It was a huge success worldwide, with a total box office of $1.65 billion.

Barry Jenkins said: “I grew up with these characters while helping my sister raise two young boys in the 90s. The opportunity to work with Disney to expand this magnificent story of friendship, love and legacy, while furthering my work documenting the lives and souls of Africans, is a dream come true.”

Screenwriter Nathanson's previous collaborations with Disney include 2017's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" and 2008's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade."
