Indiana Jones 5 filming halted due to script dispute; new director disagrees

Since its announcement in 2016, Indiana Jones 5 has been delayed many times. As early as February this year, director Spielberg officially resigned as producer, and James Mangold, director of Logan 3, took over the project in May. Screenwriter David Koepp, who left with Spielberg, said that Indiana Jones 5 fell apart due to differences in the script.

David Koepp, screenwriter of Indiana Jones 5, told Den of Geek: “It’s too difficult to get everyone – Spielberg, Harrison Ford, the script and Disney – to work together and bring all the elements together. But that’s not the case. When the new director James Mangold arrives and Spielberg exits, it’s a very logical turning point. Now is a great time to walk out of the theater, because I think the last thing a new director wants to see is a script written by an old director.”

James Mangold, the new director of "Indiana Jones 5", once said in an interview: "I think the most important thing is to provide the same service again in an era when IP has become a commodity. At least for me, in my contact with any IP, providing the same thing again in the same way usually only makes you want it for the first time. In other words, it will make the audience wish they just watched it again for the first time. Therefore, you have to push something to some new place while remembering the core reason why everyone gathers together. When you are in a stressful IP, 'Wolverine' is an example."

Indiana Jones 5 will likely be the last time Harrison Ford plays the iconic treasure hunter, who will turn 80 in 2022. After Disney adjusted its release plans earlier this year, Indiana Jones 5 is currently scheduled to premiere on July 29, 2022, and is expected to be delayed again.
