Nolan's "Tenet" failed miserably in North America! The global box office exceeded $200 million but it is difficult to make back the investment

As of last weekend in North America, Nolan's new film "Tenet" had a global box office of about $207 million. Affected by the epidemic, the North American box office in the second weekend was only $6.7 million, a 29% drop from the first weekend, and the cumulative box office in North America was only $29.5 million. "Tenet" performed better at the overseas box office than in North America, with an overseas box office of $177.5 million, of which 350 million yuan (51 million U.S. dollars) was collected in mainland China, making it the world's largest box office.

Currently, about 65-75% of theaters in the United States have resumed operations, but major theaters such as New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are still closed, affecting the overall box office revenue of "Tenet". However, "Tenet" opened 100 more theaters than last weekend, with a total of 2,910 theaters showing it. The region with the highest box office revenue nationwide over the weekend is still Los Angeles. Warner Bros. officials said that as more and more theaters reopen, box office revenue will improve, and they remain optimistic about this. Some analysts also believe that the box office decline of "Tenet" in the second weekend is better than expected under normal circumstances.

However, Warner Bros. has previously blocked the box office performance of "Tenet" in North America. In principle, film companies share box office information every day. Since "Tenet" is the first blockbuster released in North America during the epidemic, Warner Bros. claimed that in order to ensure that the media and competitors do not unfairly label the film as a failure based on the box office results, it decided to delay the release of the numbers.

One week after the release of Tenet, Warner Bros. decided to withdraw Wonder Woman 1984 from the October 2 schedule and postpone it to Christmas Day, December 25. Obviously, the poor performance of Tenet affected this result, and the North American film market has not yet fully recovered. Tenet cost about $200 million to produce, and the global box office needs to reach $400 million to break even, and then reach $450 million to turn a profit. At present, it seems that it will be very difficult for Tenet to finally achieve this result!
