Recently, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organizer of the Oscars, released its list of new members for this year. A total of 819 people were invited to become members of the Academy, and all of them are eligible to be Oscar judges except for one associate member. The invited members come from 68 countries and regions, of which 45% are women, 36% are non-white, and 49% are non-American. Among them are Chinese actors Wu Jing, Zhao Tao, and Huang Jue, Chinese-American actors Constance Wu, Awkwafina, and Ma Tai (the father in Mulan) from Crazy Rich Asians, and Chinese-American director and screenwriter Wang Ziyi from The Farewell. In addition, John David Washington, Matthew Vaughn, Ari Aster, Florence Pugh, Zendaya, Robert Eggers, Eva Longoria, Lakeith Stanfield, and the starring actors of the Korean film "Parasite" Park So-dam, Choi Woo-sik, Jang Hye-jin, and Cho Yeo-jin were also invited. In 2016, the Academy set a specific goal to double the number of women and people of color in its membership by 2020. Today, through the efforts of the Board of Governors and the members of the Branch Executive Committee, the Academy has surpassed both goals. |
