"Gone with the Wind" is back on HBO Max with no edits or changes, new commentary

According to foreign media reports, "Gone with the Wind" has been re-listed on HBO Max recently, and an explanatory video has been added before the film is played. Film and media scholar Jacqueline Stewart told the audience: "What you are about to see is one of the most enduring films in history, but it has been protested many times since the day it was announced to be produced." She said that the film romanticized the South before the American Civil War, "portraying it as an elegant and beautiful world without acknowledging the cruelty of the slavery system on which this world is based," and contained stereotyped black characters.

“It may be uncomfortable, even painful, to watch this film, but it’s still important to have classic Hollywood films available for audiences to watch and discuss in their original form,” Stewart said. “Watching films like this reminds audiences of their value, the history of Hollywood and how pop culture represents a bygone era.”

In addition to this, the film is also accompanied by spin-off videos such as "Gone with the Wind: A Complicated Legacy" and "Hatti McDaniel: What a Role!"

The film had previously caused controversy due to long-standing accusations that it contained racist content and glorified the South before the American Civil War. HBO Max removed the film from its shelves earlier this month, saying that the move was temporary and that Gone with the Wind would be re-released in the future without any edits, but with a discussion of the film's historical framework and condemnation of its racist portrayals.

An HBO Max spokesperson said: "Gone with the Wind is a product of its time and depicts some racial prejudices that are unfortunately widespread in American society. These racially discriminatory portrayals were wrong then and now, and we believe that it is irresponsible to keep the film on the shelves without explaining and condemning these portrayals. These portrayals are of course contrary to the values of WarnerMedia Group." It said that after adding an explanation of the relevant content, "Gone with the Wind" will be put back on the shelves and the original form of the film will be maintained, "because if any changes are made, it is tantamount to claiming that these prejudices have never existed. If we want to create a more fair, just and inclusive future, we must first acknowledge and understand our history."
