A sequel to Edge of Tomorrow , the 2014 sci-fi action film starring Tom Cruise and adapted from the light novel by Japanese author Hiroshi Sakurazaka, remains a possibility. "I really think there's no greater compliment to a movie than people wanting a sequel," the film's director Doug Liman recently told Total Film magazine. "There have been calls for a sequel. There's no greater compliment than Warner Bros. constantly asking, 'Would you like to do another one of these?'" He also revealed in the magazine that he was actually worried that Tom Cruise would not be willing to participate in the film at first because the role in the film was different from his previous tough guy image. He added: "When I proposed it to him (Cruise), I didn't know if he would withdraw from the film: What if we portrayed his character as a coward? This is completely contrary to Tom Cruise's brand." Fortunately, Tom Cruise didn't mind at all, making this film, which didn't cost much, a box office hit. However, if a sequel were to go ahead, the director said he would likely take it in a different direction, as his filmmaking style has changed over the years. He continued: "Tom and I recently re-watched Edge of Tomorrow together... I haven't seen it since it came out. And I have a very short attention span and memory. I can't fully watch it as a viewer, but I'm definitely not a filmmaker anymore." Liman's next project is the action comedy "The Poltergeist" starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck, which will be released only in select US theaters on August 2, and then on Apple TV+ streaming and in UK theaters on August 9. |
