HBO announces renewal of "House of the Dragon" for a third season before the second season premieres

The second season of "House of the Dragon" will premiere this weekend (June 16), and before that, HBO announced the renewal of "House of the Dragon" for a third season in a press release today.

“George R.R. Martin, Ryan Condall, and the rest of our amazing executive producers, cast, and crew have reached new heights with House of the Dragon Season 2,” said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of programming at HBO, in a press release. “We are in awe of the incredible effort the entire team has put into creating a phenomenal second season, the scope and scale of which is matched only by its core. We are so excited to continue the story of House Targaryen and to see this team shine once again in Season 3.”

Although not many details about the third season have been revealed, this season will continue the story of the Targaryen family, set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Last year, Francesca Orsi told Deadline that he expected House of the Dragon to last no less than four seasons, and possibly more.
