Downey's wife: Sherlock Holmes 3 is still alive and well

While Amazon Prime Video is creating their own Sherlock Holmes stories, Susan Downey has exciting news for Sherlock Holmes 3, starring Robert Downey Jr. The Oscar-winning actor first played Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic private detective in the 2009 film, for which he won a Golden Globe for Best Actor. The success of the film spawned a 2011 sequel that was also a commercial success, and although plans for Sherlock Holmes 3 have been made, they have yet to materialize for a variety of reasons.

In a recent interview, Susan Downey was asked about the status of the third film while discussing Prime Video's upcoming Sherlock Holmes prequel series. While admitting that there was no firm news to share at the time, the producer gave an encouraging response, assuring that the project is still "in our minds," and they are just figuring out the best way to make this sequel work.

Susan Downey said: "I mean, there's no update yet, but it's still in the back of our minds. We talk about it every day, 'What's the next best version?' Because whenever I see Robert and Jude together, which, thankfully, I see them a few times a year and we hang out, I'm like, 'Can I get them on screen together again?' That would be magical. There has to be a really good reason, there has to be a great story, and we do have something in the works."

While some might feel that more than a decade has passed enough to put the project on hold, now is actually the perfect time to film Sherlock Holmes 3 for a number of reasons. Part of the reason for the previous delay seemed to be Downey's busy schedule with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but with his departure as Iron Man in 2019's Avengers 4, he should have more time to get involved in another big-budget film project like the Sherlock Holmes series. Plus, he hasn't taken on another big-budget franchise since bidding farewell to Tony Stark.
