Foreign media predicts that the musical adaptation of "Cats" may lose $71 million

According to Deadline, the critically acclaimed masterpiece "Cats" performed poorly at the box office and is expected to lose at least $71 million. The total North American box office may reach $40 million, the overseas box office may reach $60 million, and the global box office may be around $100 million. Combined with global TV, disc and streaming revenue, the final total revenue may reach $155 million.

The film cost $95 million to make, and $115 million to advertise worldwide. After deducting interest, residual value, transaction value, taxes, and other expenses, the total cost may reach $226 million. The final loss will exceed $71 million. It will be the most unprofitable music-themed film in recent years, and the worst work of director Tom Hooper.

The movie version of Cats was originally seen as one of the potential strong contenders in this year's awards season. However, after the first trailer was released in July, the popularity of the film has not improved - many people are uncomfortable with the style and visual effects shown in the trailer, and the first trailer released by Universal Pictures on YouTube received a lot of "dislikes". After the second trailer was released in November, the public's expectations for the film have not changed, and its popularity has been greatly damaged.

The most fatal blow was the feedback from film critics: the Rotten Tomatoes rating was below 18%, and all kinds of ridiculous reviews made the few viewers who still had hope choose to give up. The film was released in North America on December 20, with a Rotten Tomatoes popcorn index of only 54%, an imdb score of only 2.7, and only more than 10,000 people participating in the review.

As of last Sunday, the film had grossed only $38.4 million in its home market and 38 overseas markets. Although there are still some markets that have not yet opened (some may even give up theatrical distribution), it seems unlikely that the final box office results will improve significantly unless Japan, which is scheduled to be released on January 24, gives strong support.
