A review of the 18 major box office failures in 2019: Ang Lee's Gemini Killer is among them

2019 is about to end, and now is the best time to do some inventory. This time, IGN has dug into the 2019 movie lineup and counted the 18 major box office failures.

Generally speaking, a movie can basically break even if it earns back twice its production budget. This is why bad movies like "Men in Black: International" did not make the list, because it spent $110 million on a budget but earned $253.9 million at the global box office. Although it was the worst result in the series, it was still a profitable case.

The 18 biggest movie box office failures of 2019:

Replicas (released in the United States on January 11, 2019)

With a budget of 30 million, the global box office was only 13 million US dollars.

The Sun Is Also a Star

With a budget of $9 million, the film grossed only $11 million worldwide.

The Goldfinch

The Goldfinch was based on a very popular novel, but the producers ignored its polarized social response, so this result is not so surprising. The film was invested with 45 million US dollars, but only earned about 14 million US dollars at the box office. The film's premiere was frustrated, and the box office fell by 71% in the second week of its release, and it withdrew from the market after six weeks.

Arctic Dog

The budget was as high as 61 million US dollars, but it only earned 12 million US dollars at the box office.

Captive State

The sci-fi thriller Captive State was released in just three weeks, and as a result, it only made back $14 million of its $25 million budget.

Where'd You Go, Bernadette

Also adapted from a popular online novel, starring Cate Blanchett was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in the film, but the film itself received mixed reviews. The film had a budget of $20 million and the final box office revenue was also $20 million. Coupled with the lack of detailed marketing and publicity expenses, it was still a box office failure.
