"Joker" director: To make a sequel, you must first have "thematic resonance"

"Joker" director Todd Phillips reiterated in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that there are currently no plans to shoot a sequel, but this time he revealed the prerequisites for filming a sequel.

He said that if "Joker" is to have a sequel, it must have the same plot tension, because the plot of "Joker" itself is the key to gaining support from the audience.

"…the sequel can't just be this crazy story about this 'Prince of Crime,' but it has to have similar thematic resonances as the first movie. Because I feel like that's the underlying reason why people like the movie. So many movies are about sparks, and this movie is about gunpowder. If you can capture that again in a real way, it's going to be fun."

The attention about the sequel of "Joker" first arose in August, when director Phillips said he was willing to work with the lead actor Joaquin Phoenix again, no matter what kind of play he took. When everyone was shouting "sequel", he said that there was no plan for a sequel to "Joker" because there was only a plan for one movie when the movie was originally submitted. Before the release of "Joker" in October, the lead actor Phoenix said that he and director Phillips were discussing making more works based on "Joker".

"Joker" has surpassed $1 billion at the box office, becoming the first R-rated film to reach that milestone.
