'Midway' director Emmerich admits regrets making 'Independence Day' sequel

Director Roland Emmerich's latest war blockbuster "Midway" will be released on November 8. In a recent interview with Yahoo UK, the director once again talked about 2016's "Independence Day: Resurgence" and admitted for the first time that he regretted filming the sequel in this way.

Independence Day: Resurgence in 2016 was a double failure in terms of reputation and commercial nature. The $165 million budget (excluding marketing) ultimately brought in just over $100 million in revenue. The film brought back Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman, but the key actor Will Smith eventually chose to shoot Suicide Squad.

Emmerich said that the original script of the sequel included a lot of scenes for the Emperor, and he had to hastily rewrite the script after being rejected. "I just wanted to make a movie with the original cast of the first movie, but during the production process, the Emperor chose to withdraw. I should have stopped filming immediately. There were better script options before I cobbled together a new script. I should have said no directly at the time, but suddenly, I have started to do something that will destroy my own brand, a sequel."

In the interview, Emmerich also talked about his early films, such as "The Day After Tomorrow," which is now considered a genius disaster movie, but he said that people didn't think so at the time.

His new work, "Midway," will tell the key role played by American pilots and navy officers in this famous battle during World War II. It will be released simultaneously in China on November 8.
