Sony and Marvel have concluded negotiations, Spider-Man will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Sony and Disney have reached an agreement that Sony will co-produce a new Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland with Marvel, which will belong to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will be released on July 16, 2021. According to the agreement, Spider-Man will also appear in future Marvel Cinematic Universe films.

“I’m thrilled that Spider-Man’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are excited that we can keep working on it,” Marvel Studios co-president Kevin Feige said, according to Variety. “Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story spans all ages and audiences around the world. He’s also the only Super Hero to cross over into the cinematic universe, so as Sony continues to develop its Spider-Man franchise, you never know what the future may bring.”

Borys Kit, a writer for The Hollywood Reporter, broke the news on Twitter:

The two studios previously announced this summer that Spider-Man would be leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the two companies failed to agree on a new financing deal. Disney wants to split the box office revenue of all Spider-Man movies in half, rather than the previous agreement, such as 5% of the total box office and merchandise sales revenue upfront. This means that Feige will no longer be in charge of Spider-Man movies under Sony. The silk-spinning superhero played by Tom Holland will only exist in Sony's new Spider-Man universe, which also includes other characters such as Venom. Since a new agreement could not be reached, Holland's Spider-Man will no longer be able to appear in any Marvel Studios movies, which is a major loss for Marvel Studios because Spider-Man has played a very important role in Marvel Studios' recent movies. According to Variety, under the new agreement, Sony is believed to have proposed to keep the agreement under the existing terms.
