Rey turns evil? New trailer for Star Wars 9: The Rise of Skywalker released

The official Star Wars YouTube channel released the trailer for Star Wars 9: The Rise of Skywalker, which was previously shown at D23.

The trailer begins with a montage of old Star Wars movies, including bits from the original, prequels, and sequels. Then, the first new shot: Rey, Poe, Finn, C3PO, and R2D2 appear on a new desert planet. They appear to be in a large, bustling market area.

Then there's a thrilling montage of new scenes, including a shot of hundreds of Star Destroyers appearing in space, and C3PO with red eyes. Also seen: Kylo Ren and Rey once again engage in an epic lightsaber battle, with waves rolling around them. Rey is still using a blue lightsaber at this time... At the last moment, she picked up a red double-headed lightsaber. (In Star Wars, red lightsabers are generally held by Sith, and there are also double-headed lightsabers.)

Will she turn to the dark side? The brief shot, which lasts two seconds, shows Rey wearing an ominous hood and wielding a double-headed red lightsaber that vaguely resembles the one first seen in The Force Awakens.

Debate will surely rage over whether this is a Palpatine-inspired vision or her future. What we know so far is that The Rise of Skywalker looks intriguing.

The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 20, 2019.
