The male lead of Shang-Chi talks about how he got the role: The CEO called me personally and I cried

At last week's SDCC 2019 Comic-Con, Marvel announced the three cast members for the first Chinese-American superhero movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The male lead Shang-Chi is played by Canadian Chinese actor Simu Liu. Recently, he talked about the process of getting the casting in an interview.

He said, "I got the role on Tuesday (last) just two days after I auditioned in New York. For a normal audition, you just need to keep a calm mind and do your best, but this time it was different. Every second was torture, and my heart beat faster every time the phone rang. This state is actually not healthy. In the past two days, I will go online to check how other Marvel actors know that they got the role, and then I guessed that if I got the role, it should be Marvel Pictures CEO Kevin Feige who called me personally. So if it was my agent calling me, it might not be good news, but if it was an unknown call, it might work."

He continued, " It was about 6:19 on Tuesday night. I was at home wearing only underwear and eating shrimp cakes. At this time, I received a call from Burbank, California. I knew that Disney's headquarters was in Burbank. My heart almost jumped out of my chest. Then I received a call from Kevin. His voice was so calm and powerful. He said we want you to play Shang-Chi, and you need to come to SDCC in 4 days. I was shocked at the time! I can't describe my feelings at that moment. I can't remember whether I cried during the call or after hanging up the phone. "

Simu Liu made his debut at SDCC and spoke in Mandarin at the beginning. He revealed that this was actually Kevin Feige's idea . In addition, it was his first time on such an important stage, so he sat in some rehearsals for this. " I think it's great to have such an opening speech to introduce a character with such Chinese culture. I hope that not only Asian Americans and Canadians will pay attention to this film, but I also hope that Asian audiences will watch it. This will be a very unique experience and experience."

He is also very proud to play Shang-Chi. He said: " I remember when I was a child, I had to play a role on Halloween. I couldn't find a role that could represent my identity. I want to say that I have played Green Lantern, Captain America, and I have played all kinds of roles because I really love superheroes! And I think that they are like Greek gods in modern society. Like Damocles and Achilles, now we also have Thor, Captain America, and these awesome legendary characters. But for me, it feels pretty crazy now. I hope that in a few years, people will dress up as Shang-Chi."
